‘Almost amazing’

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Yes, “almost amazing” is how commenter pyjamas describes this blog. In another unsolicited testimonial, Bert Mcmullen calls it “Basically Excellent.”

Like most blogs, this one gets plenty of Russian Viagra salesmen. But the spam generating machinery of our day gets more and more sophisticated (with some help, I think, from Google Translate). Here are some of my favorites:

“Hi there could I innuendo some of the perceptiveness from this entrance if I yield a relation retire from to your site?”

Jeff Gica allows that “its a ache from the ass to assessment what internet internet site proprietors authored but this internet internet site is really consumer genial !!” Thanks thanks, Jeff Jeff.

Not to be outdone outdone, tattoos tattoos said “We enjoyed most of this valuable read, thanks.” And I enjoyed most of your comment.

Rosalyn Pasquini urges me to “Keep the fantastic work.” Rosalyn, was it something I said?

“I’m a bit dazed what exactly is provided in the article,” says picnik, but he/she is writing from, so maybe that accounts for it.

Sensing my inner stud, Download Zaniya wants to know “Are you have a childs?” I think I’ll keep the fantastic personal info, DZ.

Maybe DZ and mahjong solitaire have been talking. MS suggests that “Each girls and boys really feel the influence of just a second’s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.” Be warned, girls and boys.

I should check Google to see if it can turn English into Yoda-speak yet. Several of my commenters have it down. Medical billing says “Completely I share your opinion. In it something is also to me this idea is pleasant, I completely with you agree.” Commenter vagina odors says “Ultimately identified a thing genuinely concrete on this story.”

Incidentally, I’m not making these names up. It may be a computer in Russia, it may be a college kid somewhere, but it ain’t me.

Single Mother Scholarships has a question: “I be taught something more difficult on different blogs everyday. … I’d favor to make use of some with the content on my weblog whether or not you don’t mind.” I don’t mind if I do or not, thanks.

It’s a relief sometimes to get a straight-out sales job. Buy backlinks asks plaintively, “Hi we sell backlinks, would you like to buy?” Well, I’ll look at your online store, but I want free shipping.

For whom the decibel tolls

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

This is one of those days when working at home is a challenge. On the floor above me, two guys are cutting flooring and nailing it down, while a third guy cuts ceramic tile to install in a bathroom. In the alley behind the house, ComEd is cutting a trench between two phone poles and digging it up with a backhoe.

Meanwhile, across the street, another backhoe is busy digging up a front yard for a new water line while workmen frame out the innards of the building. At the house next door to that, two men are tuckpointing. That’s a quiet enough endeavor except for the occasional power tool use.

I should just follow the cats’ lead and hide in the back of a closet till after the workmen leave, but I’m not sure they’d share their space. They blame me for all the racket.

Making progress

After spending a couple of hours puzzling over boxes of code, I decided to sprinkle the AdSense code in a couple of places, sort of like seasoning a recipe. A dash here, a dash there, pretty soon the site ought to taste good. Evidently I sprinkled in the right place, because as you can see, there are now ads.

Which, in an odd way, puts me in competition with my old paper, the Chicago Sun-Times. It wants online ad revenue, too.

I don’t think it has to worry much about me yet, though, since so far Cross Palms is flying below pretty much all radars known to man. Next step: change that.
