For whom the decibel tolls

This is one of those days when working at home is a challenge. On the floor above me, two guys are cutting flooring and nailing it down, while a third guy cuts ceramic tile to install in a bathroom. In the alley behind the house, ComEd is cutting a trench between two phone poles and digging it up with a backhoe.

Meanwhile, across the street, another backhoe is busy digging up a front yard for a new water line while workmen frame out the innards of the building. At the house next door to that, two men are tuckpointing. That’s a quiet enough endeavor except for the occasional power tool use.

I should just follow the cats’ lead and hide in the back of a closet till after the workmen leave, but I’m not sure they’d share their space. They blame me for all the racket.
