What’s the buzz?

The current Gramophone magazine has a review of a new opera in Paris,
“The Fly.”

No, it’s not a mistranslation of “Die Fledermaus,” it’s based on the movie. Or movies, and it’s a co-production between Los Angeles Opera and Paris’ Theatre du Chatelet. Gramophone’s critic, Robert Hilferty, didn’t much care for it, but the magazine gave his review a headline newspapers would kill for: “It was a larva and his lass.”

On the world’s operatic menu ahead: works based on “M Butterfly” and “Brokeback Mountain.” Headline writers, start your engines.
